About North Cyprus
The hidden Jewel awaiting to be discovered
Information about the Undiscovered part of northern Cyprus
The natural delights of the Turkish Republic of North Cyprus are just beginning to be discovered.
Kyrenia, where East meets West
Situated on the north coast of Cyprus, Girne, with its 6000-year-long history, unique remains of countless civilizations, miles of natural beaches, calm sea, and mild climate, this is the perfect holiday resort. Bounded to the north by the sea and to the south by the Besparmak Mountain range, it offers the benefits of both sea and mountain air, and is thus an ideal resort for health and relaxation - indeed, many foreigners have retired here.
The beautiful harbor is dominated by a majestic castle which houses a museum containing the remains of an ancient ship which was salvaged from the sea. There are several mosques and churches to see in the town, and the Museum of Folk Arts, and the Museum of Decorative Arts and Painting are well worth a visit.
Famagusta
The town of Magusa was originally a small commercial port and fishing village. Its strategic position on the east-west trading routes led to its development in the thirteenth century by the Lusignans, and it became a major commercial centre. With its 365 places of worship (that is, a different one for each day of the year), and its palaces belonging to noblemen, it rose to become one of the richest cities in the Mediterranean.
Like the capital, Nicosia (Lefkosa), Famagusta (Gazimagosa) is a walled city with an old and new town. The finest architectural works of art are to be found on the walls and include the Lala Mustafa Pasha Mosque (St Nich` Cathedral), the Namik Kemal Prison, the Tomb and Museum Cambolat, and remains of numerous churches.
The new town of New Famagusta (Yeni Magusa), also known Maras, lies just to the south of the walled city
Nicosia
The city`s foundation dates back approximately 2,250 years to the original settlement of Ledra, which later became Lefkoþa in the Lusignan period. The present-day capital of the island, it is divided into Turkish and Greek sectors by a boundary known as the `green line` which runs in an east-west direction.
Huge, thick ramparts, built by the Venetians in 1970, encircle the city. The walls are three and a half miles long and have eleven towers and three gates.
Within these walls are numerous remains from the Middle Ages and later periods. Outside there is no trace of the medieval settlement that once existed as materials from those buildings were used, at various points in time, to restore and maintain the walls. In the old city of Nicosia beautiful examples of Gothic and Ottoman architecture abound - the Selimiye Mosque, the Bedestan, the Arab Ahmet Mosque, and the Buyuk Khan, to name but a few.
Guzelyurt
The name of "Guzelyurt", means "beautiful country", obviously referring to its lusciousgreen surroundings and the agricultural abundance of the towns vicinity. The area is covered with large citrus orchards. The first human settlement in the area goes back to the Neolithic period. During theBronze Age, the nearby copper mines were exploited and the processed copper was exported.
Iskele
Iskele is one of our districts consisting of the beautiful and un spoilt natural shores of the Karpaz Peninsula in Cyprus.
In addition to the natural beauties this lovely district of ours also encompasses the Karpaz Sanctuary with its rich historical sites as well as its flora and fauna.
The main agricultural products of the area are artichokes, carobs and olives. Fishing and both irrigational and dry farming also contribute to the income of the local population.
